First Friday Film Series

We are excited to announce our First Friday Film Series! Starting October 4, for four months, we’ll screen a Mission aligned film with group discussion to follow. The show starts at 5:30, and popcorn and fruit water will be provided.

Here’s a quick run down of each offering:

October 4 - Period. End of Sentence is a 2019 Academy-award winning documentary telling the story of women in a rural village outside Delhi, India, fighting to overcome the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation. It’s a story of resilience and empowerment, and the realization that a period should be the end of a sentence, not a girl’s education.

November 1 - On the first day of Native American Heritage Month, join us for a screening of Mankiller, the story of Wilma Mankiller, who overcame innumerable challenges to become the first woman Cherokee Nation Principal Chief in 1985.

December 6 - Black Girls is a 2024 documentary that tells the stories of six Black women who overcome adversities to become advocates in their communities. Black Girls celebrates the power we all have to make change and work toward a brighter future.

January 3 - Embrace is a documentary about the Body Image Movement founded by Taryn Brumfitt in 2012. Embrace follows Brumfitt’s exploration of the global issue of “body loathing” and her work to change the way we feel about ourselves and think about our bodies.

These award-winning films are sure to provoke thought and a rich discussion, and we can’t wait for you to join us at the YW for this film series.
