Alesia Summey, Director of Early Childhood Education

Alesia Summey has seen a lot of change, and a lot of growth, at the YWCA of Asheville in her 22 years here. Aleisia began her journey at the YW in 2002 working full time in the infant room, and moved to work in the preschool for many years. She was lead teacher and organizer for the (then) newly created 2 year old room before she came out of the classroom to be assistant director of the Early Learning Program and Coordinator for Head Start. She became Director of Empowerment Childcare in 2017, and is now YWCA of Asheville’s new Director of Early Childhood Education. Dr. Amieris Lavender, Director of Programs at YWCA of Asheville, says of Alesia, “I have seen her continue to push herself to grow as a leader, advocate for children, and [Alesia] is always unwavering in her compassion and support for program participants. Alesia’s promotion to Director of Early Childhood Education is a natural fit as we move the program forward.”

Alesia’s experience with the YWCA’s childcare programs is deep and long, and she is grateful that she has been able to move and grow within the organization. When asked what has kept her here for 22 years, her response is simple: “I love the Mission. The YWCA is here to help the community, and we show up every day to do that. I stay because of the Mission.”

Alesia has a level Six Early Educator Certificate and has completed her Early Childhood Credentials, but the experience she brings, and her commitment to the Mission and the community of the YWCA cannot be measured. Over the years, Alesia has had many rewarding experiences. She loves seeing children that she taught graduate school and have families of their own, and she loves interacting with members here in the building; she says the smallest things can make people feel welcome, and a part of something bigger.

Born and raised in Asheville, Alesia attended Asheville High and AB Tech. She comes from a family of educators; her father worked with the Head Start program for many years, and her mother was a teacher for 29 years. She is also passing her love of the YW down to another generation. Both of her sons came through the YW’s early learning program, and both learned to swim here.

Alesia’s experience and history with Early Childhood Education at the YWCA give her a unique perspective, and give her – and us – a lot to think about. We’re excited to see what she will accomplish in her new role. The demand for quality child care (ELP), and short term, flexible and affordable childcare (ECC) - is great in the community.
